Entries open for Vietnam War study tour

Students heading back to school this year in years 10 and 11 are being encouraged to apply for a once in a life time opportunity to travel overseas and learn about the impacts of the Vietnam War.

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy said the competition to tour Vietnam in September as part of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan commemorations is open to all year 10 and 11 students.

“This is a great opportunity for young students to learn about the history of the Vietnam War and the impact it had on the nation, local communities and the families of the servicemen and women,” Ms Kealy said.

“This conflict is one of Australia’s longest and most controversial, in which 521 young Australians lost their lives.  Over its duration it became less and less popular with the Australian people and became a flashpoint for social conflict as the reality of war was projected onto TVs in lounge rooms around the nation.”

Ms Kealy said the competition gives students an opportunity to learn more about how the controversial war helped to shape the nation and the attitudes towards those who serve our country.

“Taking part will also help younger generations understand the impact of the war on the many veterans living in our Lowan community.”

Entries, accepted until the end of term one, should explore the topic of the ‘controversial Vietnam War’ and can be written, audio visual or dioramas.

“Entries should touch on topics such as how Australia became involved in the war, the introduction of conscription, the changing attitudes to the war in Australia and the treatment of veterans when they returned home,” she said.

Ms Kealy said the costs of the study tour including airfares, meals and accommodation will be funded by the Victorian Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia.
