Grants available to improve disability access

Not-for-profit organisations and local councils in the Lowan electorate are being encouraged to apply for grants to build a “Changing Place” in their community.

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP said the Changing Places program aimed to boost access and equality for Victorians with a disability by building more-accessible bathrooms.

The grants help local councils and community groups build bathrooms that are larger than the standard size, with extra features and increased space to meet the needs of people with a disability.

Extra features to be included in the facilities are enough space for two people, a tracking hoist system and a height-adjustable, adult-size changing bench.

“There are only 20 grants available across Victoria and they go towards supporting hundreds of thousands of people across the state and encourage inclusiveness within the community,” Ms Kealy said.

Applications are open until October 13, with more information available at www.dhs.vic.gov.au/changingplaces.
