2019 Shade Grants Now Open

Local schools, community groups and sporting clubs across the Lowan electorate are being encouraged to apply for funding under the 2019 Shade Grants Program which is now open.

The Nationals Member for Lowan Emma Kealy said providing shaded areas at our schools and community facilities was a major factor in reducing the impacts of UV radiation.

The program provides funding to build new shade structures, repair or replace existing structures, create natural shade by planting trees, purchase a portable shade structure or a combination of options.

Grants of up to $25,000 are available for shade development in schools and $50,000 for eligible community groups and sporting clubs.

Applicants may also request up to $700 for sun protection items only.

Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70.

“We know that prolonged exposure at even low levels to ultra violet radiation from the sun is very dangerous to our health,” Ms Kealy said.

“We also know that shade used in combination with other sun protection measures provides the best protection.

“I am sure that all eligible schools, community organisations and sporting clubs across Lowan could put additional shade structures and equipment to very good use, not just in the heat of our summers, but all year round.”

Applications for the School Shade Grants Program close on 18 September 2019 and the Community Shade Grant Program on 2 October 2019.
