Become a F.A.S.T. Hero this National Stroke Week

Western Victorian residents are being urged to become F.A.S.T. Heroes this National Stroke Week by becoming aware of the common signs of stroke.

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy said when it comes to stroke, timing is critical and recognising the signs of stroke could save a life.

“This year the Stroke Foundation is encouraging all Australians to become F.A.S.T. Heroes and recognise the common signs of stroke and call an ambulance,” Ms Kealy said.

“Stroke is always a medical emergency and the earlier treatment is delivered, the better the outcome for the patient.

“F.A.S.T. is the internationally recognised test to identify the signs of stroke and 80 per cent of strokes will show at least one of the FAST signs.”

Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms – Can they lift both arms?

Speech – Is their speech slurred and do they understand you?

Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these symptoms act FAST and call 000.

Ms Kealy said despite being largely preventable, almost 15,000 Victorians experience a stroke each year.

“Individuals can do their part to reduce the risk of stroke by educating themselves on the causes and signs and by getting involved in this year’s National Stroke Week to help promote a better understanding of stroke.

“2019 National Stroke Week is taking place from Monday 2 to Sunday 8 September and I encourage all residents across western Victoria to get involved and become F.A.S.T. Heroes.”
