Charlie designs Christmas card for Emma Kealy MP

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy will use a design by Charlie Mayes, a Year 6 student at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Warracknabeal as the cover for her 2019 Christmas card.

Ms Kealy wrote to all primary schools in the electorate inviting students to design the cover of her Christmas card, asking them to depict what they loved best about their local area, with a touch of Christmas. They were also given the opportunity to explain their artwork in 25 words.

Ms Kealy visited St Mary’s Catholic Primary School today to announce that she had chosen Charlie’s design during a special school assembly.

''I wanted a design that meaningfully represented our great part of the State and I loved that Charlie captured the significance of the Yarriambiack Creek to both Warracknabeal and our region,” Ms Kealy said.

“Charlie described her drawing as “The Yarriambiack Creek as it flows through Warracknabeal, turned into Christmas lights”.

“The artistic talent of our youth is outstanding and it was fabulous to see so many impressive entries which detailed our local silo art trail, the Grampians National Park, many of our local lakes and rivers, sporting passions and our diverse agricultural industries.

“A number of other students who produced highly commendable artwork will receive a prize in appreciation for their outstanding efforts.

''I received almost 600 entries from 18 schools across the Lowan electorate and I will be proudly displaying some of these entries in my electorate office window.

''This is the fifth year I have asked local students to help design my Christmas card and I look forward to many more fabulous designs in the years to come.”
