Energy Chaos - Kealy continues push for gas competition
The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP says Labor has failed to address the existing gas supply monopoly in the Wimmera, causing energy chaos.
“There is an enormous amount of confusion about gas providers in the area but the reality is there is only one company currently able to supply Horsham residents”, Ms Kealy said.
“I have been contacted by frustrated Horsham residents who are struggling with soaring gas prices and taking steps to disconnect from the one and only service provider in the mistaken belief that they can transfer to another”, she said.
The Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, the Hon Lily D'Ambrosio made a commitment nearly three years ago to monitor the development of competition in the Wimmera area to ensure that the interests of consumers are protected.
“The cost of living is an enormous issue for people in Western Victoria and once again we are being left to pay increasingly inflated prices”, Ms Kealy said.
“To see gas prices and the cost of living continuing to increase in the Wimmera under the city-centric Andrews Labor Government is a real concern.
“The Minister must stand up and take action immediately so that local people can access a competitive gas market and lower their cost of living.
“The fact that she has not fulfilled her own commitment and has done absolutely nothing to ensure other providers are available to supply gas through the pipeline is nothing short of appalling”, she said.
