Honouring our war veterans

Local organisations are being encouraged to apply for funding to honour Victorian veterans and mark 75 years since the end of World War Two.

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy said that while every part of Australia has a connection to our military, the connection is particularly strong across Lowan.

“Families right across the Wimmera have sent sons and daughters away to war to defend our nation and our way of life,” Ms Kealy said.

“Funding programs like this are extremely important in helping us to honour and acknowledge those who have served, died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars, armed conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

“I salute our brave servicemen and women for their service and dedication to the country we love and encourage all eligible local organisations to consider applying to ensure we never forget the service and sacrifice they have made.”

Applications are now being sought under three funding streams including a new, one-off 75th Anniversary of the End of World War Two program to support events that recognise the milestone through grants of up to $30,000.

Communities with links to the conflicts are especially encouraged to apply, with successful projects to honour and recognise WWII veterans, tell lesser known WWII stories, identify significant sites and engage diverse communities.

Applications are also open for the annual Victoria Remembers Minor Grant and the Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant programs.

The Victoria Remembers Minor Grant Program provides grants of up to $30,000 for projects which honour or commemorate veterans service or educate Victorians about veteran’s contributions.

The Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program also provides individual grants of up to $30,000 for projects that restore or improve existing memorials, honour rolls and avenues of honour to their original condition or to better reflect veteran service in the community.
