Kealy brings in New Year with Karen Community

While visiting Burma/Myanmar recently, Emma Kealy MP has taken the opportunity to join the Hpa An Karen community celebrate Karen New Year.

“It was a wonderful experience to celebrate Karen New Year with these amazing people on their home lands,” Ms Kealy said.

“I have been fortunate to attend local Karen celebrations in Nhill and this experience was very similar. There was great colour and movement, delicious food and extremely lovely people.”

“I am grateful to have had this opportunity which was only possible because of the wonderful relationships I have developed with members of Nhill’s Karen community.

“The Karen resettlement is a wonderful migration success story, making up more than ten percent of Nhill’s population and the township now being rewarded with growth and vibrancy.

“Nhill and the Karen community have clearly demonstrated what is possible when refugees are welcomed into towns with open arms.

“The many flow on benefits to the wider community, businesses, schools, sporting clubs and other local services has been a wonderful success,” she said.
