Kealy encourages people to attend ANZAC services

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP is encouraging people to attend ANZAC Day services across the Electorate.

“I encourage everyone to attend their local ANZAC day ceremony to show respect to those who fought, supported our troops and died for our country” Ms Kealy said.

Just over a century ago when Australia was only 14 years old, men and women from all over Australia were called upon to leave behind their family and friends and cross the sea to serve their country. From a population of less than five million, more than 400,000 enlisted.

“Of these young men and women more than 60,000 made the ultimate sacrifice and more than 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner,” Ms Kealy said.

Over 10 million lives were lost over the duration of the Great War. ANZAC Day remembers those who have served our country during times of conflict and crisis, and to reflect on their selfless sacrifice to ensure our freedom.

“On 25 April every year, we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the tragedy of war and remember the ANZAC legacy of courage, mateship and sacrifice,” Ms Kealy said.

“It is also a time to remember the deep emotional scars that many carried silently following this terrible time in our history and the impact of war on families spanning generations.

“It is heartening to see increasing numbers of people, especially our younger generations, attending ANZAC services paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedom and lifestyle we do.

“I am proud that my Great Grandfather fought for our country in World War II in the 8th Light Horse Regiment. The fob watch gifted to him by the Apsley community remains a cherished keepsake in the family today as recognition for his contributions in the war,” she said.

Last year the Liberal Nationals announced that they would ban the holding of property auctions on Anzac Day prior to 1pm.

“Anzac Day is a time of solemn commemoration and the Liberal Nationals will not allow anyone to openly disrespect this important time of remembrance”, Ms Kealy said.
