Locals beware – gas supply options vaporise

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP is alerting Horsham residents to approaches by energy companies falsely saying they can provide gas to private homes.

Some residents have reported signing up to a new gas retailer only to find that after a long and frustrating process they are unable to transfer, requiring them to resign with their original provider.

Energy Australia is currently the only company able to provide a gas supply in Horsham.

“There is an enormous amount of confusion about gas providers in the area but the reality is there is only one gas retailer in Horsham”, Ms Kealy said.

“I have been contacted by frustrated Horsham residents struggling with soaring gas prices and looking to disconnect from Energy Australia in the mistaken belief that they can transfer to another retailer.

“I urge anyone who has been contacted by another gas retailer to contact the Energy and Water Ombudsman on 1800 500 509 to report this misleading advertising”, she said.

Horsham residents have reported a recent 15.3% price increase for gas, equating to a 75% increase over the last four years.

“The Andrews Labor Government made a commitment three years ago to monitor the development of gas supply competition in the Wimmera area but has done nothing to secure a second gas supplier to Horsham to ensure competition and fair pricing”, Ms Kealy said.

“To see gas prices and the cost of living continuing to increase in the Wimmera under the city-centric Andrews Labor Government is a real concern.

“Daniel Andrews must stand up and take action immediately so that Horsham residents can access a competitive gas market and lower their cost of living”, she said.
