Make Victoria safe: Liberal Nationals to boost community safety in western Victoria
A Liberal Nationals Government will focus on more police on the beat, tougher sentencing and $24 million for more local community safety measures like CCTV cameras in at risk areas across western Victoria.
Grants of up to $250,000 will be available to local councils to develop public safety and security infrastructure like CCTV systems, improved lighting and creating local solutions to local crime.
Councils will be able to identify areas within their community such as park edges and shopping areas that attract a higher rate of crime and implement measures to stop anti-social behaviour.
Since Daniel Andrews was elected the Yarriambiack Shire Council has seen a staggering 98.5% rise in the number of offences, with Hindmarsh Shire Council, the Horsham Rural City Council and the Southern Grampians Shire Council experiencing rises of 43.7%, 31.4% and 13% respectively.
This announcement follows other community focused crime prevention measures announced by the Liberal Nationals including:
- Re-establish a ‘Police in Schools’ program to allow police to better engage with young Victorians.
- Fund the establishment of a Victoria Police Mobile CCTV camera rollout and;
- Commit $2 million over four years to Neighbourhood Watch for local crime prevention initiatives.
The Liberal Nationals are committed to ensuring all Victorians feel safe in their communities.
Comments attributable to Emma Kealy, Member for Lowan
“We are in the grips of a law and order crisis, but the Premier for Melbourne has watered down bail laws, weakened sentencing and failed to equip our hard working regional police with adequate resources to protect our streets.
CCTV cameras have a track record of deterring crime and assisting in the quick identification and arrest of criminals.
Residents in the Lowan electorate have a clear choice in November between Daniel Andrews, who has spent three years failing on crime, or The Nationals who have a zero tolerance approach to violent criminals and a clear plan to make Victoria safe again.”
