Opportunity to help shape retirement village laws

The Nationals Member for Lowan Emma Kealy is encouraging people across the Lowan electorate to have their say on retirement village laws.

The Retirement Villages Act 1986 is currently under review and open for consultation.

“It is important that we take this opportunity to ensure the Act offers the best protection for residents of retirement villages while at the same time encouraging growth and innovation in this rapidly growing sector,” Ms Kealy said.

The review is being undertaken as a result of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Retirement Housing Sector.

The review aims to address concerns around the complexity of contracts, the disclosure of fees and charges, obligations for repairs and maintenance and consumer’s rights and obligations when selling a village unit.

More information about the current laws regarding retirement villages is available by visiting

“This review is an opportunity for local residents to have their say on how the regulation of the retirement village sector could be amended to ensure the best possible outcome for our local residents and their families,” Ms Kealy said.

The review has already commenced with submissions open until 6 December 2019.
