Rushed battery project arrives under the cover of darkness

Residents and producers near Stawell are facing the brutal reality of the Allan Labor Government’s first rushed major renewables project.

The $250 million Joel Joel Battery Energy Storage Project, rushed through under the new Development Facilitation Program, will be the biggest battery in the state.

Despite the sheer size of the 10ha project, it was rushed through planning in only nine weeks.

This hurried approval meant local communities and councils had no say in a decision that will affect them for decades.

Communities have been fearful since March after the Allan Labor Government removed their right to appeal these projects to VCAT.

This is the first example of what can happen without the right to appeal to a “third umpire”.

Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy, said it was a slap in the face to local communities who had no idea the project would be arriving on their doorstep.

“It’s outrageous – not even the Northen Grampians Shire Council knew about it,” Ms Kealy said.

“If the local council is blindsided what hope do we have?

“How can the Allan Labor Government possibly make the right decision for our community after just nine weeks?

“Imagine having a 350 megawatt battery built across the road from your house without having any say.

“These projects have long-lasting impacts on our regional landscapes, communities, and cultural heritage.”

The Joel Joel battery will be located about 25km east of Stawell.

“Labor can’t manage energy, can’t manage planning and regional Victorians are paying the price,” Ms Kealy said.
