School crossing upgrades announced for Horsham

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy MP has said while better late than never, funding announced today to improve road crossing safety on both McPherson Street and Natimuk Road is a win for the community.

“For years I have been working closely with school communities and lobbying the Andrews Labor Government for essential safety measures to these highway school crossings, so it comes as a huge relief and big win for us all to finally see the safety improvements our young students deserve,” Ms Kealy said.

“Ongoing concerns and even near misses due to the lack of crossing signage, faded signs, poor positioning of school crossings and associated warning signs have been raised by the community but for years fell on deaf ears within the Labor Government.

“Students, families and the general public use these crossings every day and with school returning this week more kids are back to walking, riding and crossing our busy roads,” she said.

The school crossing on Natimuk Road is part of the Wimmera Highway and the school crossing on McPherson Street is part of the Western Highway that carries all freight traffic between Adelaide and Melbourne.

“I congratulate the school communities for their tireless efforts and campaigning, which has helped to secure today’s funding announcement. It just goes to show that together we can build a better region for our future,” Ms Kealy said.
