Labor’s crippling taxes destroying the great Australian dream

The Allan Labor Government’s financial mismanagement is continuing to hit Victorians already struggling with cost-of-living pressures.

The Nationals’ Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy, spoke in state parliament this week to highlight how Labor’s crippling taxes and inability to manage money was forcing Victorians to pay 30 per cent more for groceries than six years ago while slugging them 22 per cent more on their power bills.

Meanwhile, soaring property taxes are putting the dream of owning a home even further out of reach for many, adding an average of $373,000 to the average house and land package.

Victorians now pay more in property taxes than any other state.

Ms Kealy said Victorians shouldn’t be forced to continue putting their hands in their pockets to pay for Labor’s reckless spending.

“Data commissioned by the Housing Industry Association shows government taxes and charges now account for 43 per cent of the price of an average house and land package, meaning most Victorians will spend at least the first 10 years of their mortgage paying off the Allan Labor Government’s taxes,” she said.

“It’s simply ludicrous and a complete failure from a government that claims to be all about getting more people into homes.

“There’s no such thing as a house and land package under Labor – it’s a house and tax package.

“Labor can’t manage money and hard-working Victorians are paying the price.”
