Labor’s WRL backflip proves it’s time to scrap VNI West

Labor’s eleventh-hour review of the Western Renewables Link exposes the uncertainty surrounding its transmission agenda and strengthens the case to scrap VNI West altogether.
The Nationals Deputy Leader and Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy, said Labor MPs should not be claiming victory after years of ignoring farmers and regional communities fighting Labor’s divisive transmission plan.
“Labor’s Martha Haylett has had four years in Parliament to stand up for these communities. Where was she when farmers were begging Labor to listen?” Ms Kealy said.
“Martha has had every opportunity to stand up for her community, but instead voted to allow VicGrid powers to enter private land without permission, compulsorily acquire land and fine Victorians who dare stand in Labor’s way.
“Now, weeks before an election, Labor wants people to believe it has suddenly discovered the concerns farmers have been raising for years.
“That isn’t leadership. It’s election-year panic.”
Ms Kealy said Labor’s decision to pause compulsory acquisitions during the review was no substitute for the certainty farmers deserve.
“Farmers have endured years of uncertainty over their homes, farms and businesses.
“If Labor now believes the WRL needs fresh scrutiny because of rising costs and pressure on power bills, it cannot justify blindly pressing ahead with the much larger VNI West project.
“AEMO’s own figures put VNI West at around $11.4 billion.
“That is precisely why The Nationals have committed to scrap VNI West and review Victoria’s transmission plan, including alternatives to Labor’s proposed greenfield transmission build.
“For years Labor told farmers these projects were essential and there was no alternative. Now, on the eve of an election, the Premier is questioning whether WRL represents value for money.
“So don’t stop at WRL.
“Scrap VNI West. Review the transmission plan. Protect our farms and stop loading billions of dollars of unnecessary infrastructure costs onto Victorian power bills.”
