Farmers across Victoria, particularly in the south-west, are facing the worst drought in decades.

Dams are drying out, and a lack of rain over across the Easter break means even if it does rain now, it’s unlikely any feed will grow over winter due to the cold temperatures.

There is very little fodder available in Victoria, South Australia or most of New South Wales.

This scarcity has a double impact on the cost of keeping stock alive, with both fodder prices and the cost to freight across increasing distances soaring.

Last month, the South Australian Government boosted its drought support to $73 million, including much needed fodder and water freight relief, mental health support and even significant rebates on the emergency services tax.

Meanwhile, in Victoria, instead of expanding support to our farmers like other states, the Allan Labor Government has slugged Victoria’s food producers with a huge new tax.

Regional communities and farmers are set to be hit hardest with tax hikes up to 189 per cent.

This won’t just hurt farmers, but will drive up the cost of groceries for every household.

It’s simply outrageous during a drought and cost-of-living crisis.

Our food producers in Victoria deserve real support when they need it – not to be forgotten and taxed into oblivion.

Labor can’t manage money, and it’s farmers and all who enjoy Victorian-grown food, who are paying the price.
