The Nationals Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy, is encouraging the community to be aware of the signs of H5 bird flu after a case was detected in Hamilton.
The case is one of 60 confirmed in Victoria in the past two weeks among wild birds, but the virus can affect any bird species.
Ms Kealy, who is also the Shadow Minister for Agriculture, encouraged people to be vigilant and report any cases or sick or dead wildlife.
“Unfortunately this virus can spread rapidly, so awareness and information are vital in helping control the potential spread,” she said.
“Signs to look out for in wild birds include difficulty standing or walking properly; a droopy or puffed-up appearance; breathing problems; unusual posture; or sudden death, particularly in large numbers.
“If you see a sick or injured bird with any of these symptoms, please avoid direct contact and make a report as soon as possible.”
Ms Kealy said people could do this through the Agriculture Victoria website or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
